imagine… Alma Deutscher: Finding Cinderella
Musical prodigy Alma Deutscher aged 11 (seen here with younger sister Helen), is staging her first full-length opera, Cinderella.
Composer, pianist, violinist… Alma learned to read music before she could read words. She began playing the piano aged two and at four years old she was composing her own music.
So like obviously this girl is super awesome but ALSO that is the coolest take on Cinderella I have EVER heard it’s giving me fucking chills
It was amazing. The opera she wrote is just beautiful. And I highly recommend Finding Cinderella to people. It’s a lovely documentary about quite possibly the nicest child in the world.
When you hear about child prodigies you usually find some tiger parent in the background who has pushed and pushed their child to be like that. Alma and Helen are the antithesis of that. Almost all their learning and practice is self-led. They’re home schooled but their lessons are mature and relaxed and look like a lot of fun. They spend hours playing and making up stories for fun. They are children who have been allowed to flourish and grow at their own pace.
Honestly they remind me a lot of the Brontë sisters who’s childhood was very similar.
I especially like that while the world’s attention is on Alma that in the family home she and Helen are equals. Helen is also a gifted musician and very intelligent, though ever so slightly dominated by her big sister so she’s naturally quieter.
They’re really the sweetest girls in the world and I hope they continue to live lives driven by their passion.
